Finding Out About Scholarships

Here are some simple steps you should make sure you follow when seeking scholarships.

A great way to start your search for scholarships is on our Directory of Scholarship Websites.

Research!
Research can help you find scholarships you may not have otherwise known about. Most public and campus libraries carry scholarship guides.

Seek out Local Scholarships.
Many community organizations, churches, and clubs offer scholarships. Your high school guidance counselor should be able to provide information about most of them and can refer you to sponsors who can provide applications and information.

Check with the Colleges You're Applying to.

Most college-sponsored scholarships don't require additional applications beyond their standard admission and financial aid applications. Just be sure to complete and file the applications on time!

Some colleges offer special scholarships (for certain major fields or for certain talents) that you can apply for in addition to any that are open to all applicants.

Ask Employers.
Your parents might already be aware if scholarships are provided for children of employees. If not, the human resource department is usually the place to check to find out what is available. The staff there should be able to provide applications, deadlines, and any other information you'll need.

If you are employed, check with your employer to see if scholarships are available. Be sure to get any application forms and information about deadlines and complete the process on time.

Applying For Scholarships

The most important thing to do to apply for scholarships is to get accurate information up front:

What are the qualifications for applicants?
Where do you get forms and how do you apply (online, by mail, etc.)?
Are additional interviews or references required?
What are the deadlines?
Once you have this information, you can make a list of what's due and when.

Most scholarship funding comes directly from the colleges themselves, so focus on making your college applications as strong as possible.

Tips for Winning Scholarship Applications

1. Apply only if you are eligible. Read all the scholarship requirements and directions carefully. Make sure you are eligible before you send in your application.
2. Follow directions. Provide everything that is required. However, do not supply things that are not requested--you could be disqualified.
3. Make sure to use proper grammar – and check your spelling! This is your first (and possibly only) impression, so make it a good one.
4. Complete the application in full. If a question does not apply to you, note that on the application. Do not leave a question blank. Be sure to supply all additional supporting materials, including transcripts, letters of recommendation, and essays.
5. Write a clear, concise essay conveys a strong message. The key to writing a strong essay is to be personal and specific. Include concrete details to help your case.
6. Watch all deadlines. To help keep yourself on track, impose your own deadline that is at least two weeks prior to the official deadline. Use the buffer time to make sure everything is ready on time. Do not rely on extensions--very few scholarship providers allow them at all.
7. Make sure your application gets where it needs to go. Put your name (and Social Security number, if applicable) on all pages of the application. Pieces of your application may get lost unless they are clearly identified.
8. Ask for help if you need it. If you have problems with the application, do not hesitate to call the funding organization.
